Cattle Bedding – Why Use Sand?
Now, while we are aggregate suppliers, and certainly not farmers!
We have spoken to the vast array of farmers we currently supply with our renowned sources of bedding sand to obtain a better understanding of why some choose to bed their cattle on sand, and for those why they wouldn’t be persuaded otherwise!
From our open conversations, we have identified the below main reasons for choosing Sand.
Keeping it short …
Traction
Cows generally find it easier to get up and down on sand. A sturdy yet cushioned sand bed can assist older cows with stabilisation when using their hind legs to get up, This in turn results in less stress on the knee & hocks, less injuries incurred by getting stuck in stalls & reduced risk of white line lesions.
Support
As a result of increased traction, research has shown cows lie dow more often and for longer bouts on sand as it is a softer & more comfortable surface, and they gain confidence in their ability to get back up.
Cleaner Alternative
Generally speaking Environmental bacteria counts are lower with sand, when compared with other organic bedding options. This both reduces the risk of infection & diseases but also acts as a lightly abrasive cleaning agent removing manure from legs, udder & flanks.

Our Two Most Popular Options for Use as Bedding Sands:
Quarried Silica Sand
Grading: 0/2mm
SUPPLY: Can be supplied in 8 Wheeler Loads, Artic Loads or Bulk Bags for easier storage.
SILICA: Our most preferred sand due to its fine & screened qualities, making it much easier to reuse the manure in certain spreading machines. Comes with certification to confirm grading qualities and all generic guarantees held with quarried aggregates.
Recycled Fill Sand
Grading:
SUPPLY: Can be supplied in 8 Wheeler Loads, Artic Loads or Bulk Bags for easier storage.
RECYCLED: A more budget friendly alternative for bedding, can be, but not bound to silica sand sourcing. Being a recycled product it comes with less certifications and guarentee’s of grading, however all products are sold as ‘screened’.
